Garmin 265WT
Have used the 265WT for 2+ months now. Bought it because of a relocation to a new city (Washington, DC). Before purchase, I considered this and the 255W (similar, older model without the traffic). The price difference at the time was ~$30, so I decided to go for the slightly newer model that came with the free traffic.
GPS Functionality:
I have found the unit to work quite well most of the time. Usually when I get strange directions it is because of a setting in the menus preventing U-turns (which you can change), for example. Unit doesn't always give you the truly fastest route to a destination, so local knowledge is still better than always following what the unit tells you. But whenever I've needed to go somewhere that was new, the unit always gets me there. The points of interest feature is nice, especially if you are new to an area, as it can help you quickly find whatever you need. The main purpose of this model GPS is to provide directions, and I think it does that job very well.
Traffic Functionality:
This was not something that I required from a GPS when I was searching, but because the price difference was so low vs. the 255W, I decided to get it. This unit has free traffic for life, but the tradeoff is that whenever you are sitting still (in the driveway, in traffic, etc) small ads appear at the top where the street you are driving on would be. I don't like ads of any kind, so I was wary of this at first, but it really is not that big of a deal -- the ads are so small they are hard to read, and I have good eyesight. Also, if you turn the traffic receiver off, the ads disappear altogether.
The actual traffic function in my opinion still needs some work. I live in the DC area and traffic is everywhere. Often I will have already come to a stop or slow down, and soon after the GPS indicates "traffic ahead". So, the real time traffic indication is not that great, yet -- hopefully Garmin can improve on this with time. However, the one saving grace of the traffic feature is that you can view a "traffic map" for the general area, with specific areas of traffic indicated in yellow / red. This IS a useful feature, as you can look at your normal route (commute in/home for example) to see if there is anything unusual that day and plan accordingly.
Overall, I think this unit is an excellent value: it performs GPS duties quite well, and provides a somewhat useful traffic feature, for a very small price increase vs. the identical unit without traffic. Assuming Garmin can improve the traffic function with time, it's probably worth the extra bucks over the 255W.
Fair GPS
Was looking for a month in Garmin units and finally got this for our road trip to LA & FL in holidays. working quite fair with exceptions bellow:
in Orlando there was a big construction area and apparently new roads that were not covered at all.
in Miami it was challenging to deal with it's guidance and recalculation in airport area highways. sometimes recalculation took like a minute or so which was not satisfactory at all.
the default built-in sorting of gas station is horrible! you have to make it understand to sort with the option "on the route" or you would stress out while your gas light turns on out of town! It has the same problem for sorting the store names in find section too. furthermore, it was saying the exit alerts pretty late and we had to look to the distance/guess!
One of the big advantages over other Garmin units was the speed limit and it was updating in the route quite fair.
Bluetooth was working fine, voice quality quite fair. ability and features much better than my experience with Nuvi 350. It doesn't have the option to recalculate the route and you have to go to tools section and make it understand there.
Overall it wasn't that bad, better than finding your way in iphone map but still the Garmin software needs to be debugged/rebuilt.
Lots of features, decent price
I checked around the stores in town at their pre-Christmas sales for this model, and Amazon had the best price. This is the second GPS I've owned, and I like it much better than the TomTom I had in the past. The live traffic feature is really useful. I also like that the spoken feature gives you the names of the streets where you turn. My old GPS didn't do that and it makes it far easier to keep your eyes on the road instead of looking at the map on the screen. Looking for specific points of interest seems to be hit or miss. The nuvi will list a supermarket two towns away, but not the one that I know is right around the corner for instance. And it doesn't seem to recognize places like the Bronx Zoo or the Metropolitan Museum of Art as points of interest. So you sometimes still need to preplan or use the internet to get an exact address. Other than that glitch I'm pretty happy with my purchase.
